Setting up a website on Google Search Console

Step 1: Access Google Search Console

  • Navigate to Google Search Console.
  • Log in with a Google account that you use for managing your website or PPC campaigns.

Step 2: Add a Property

  • Click the Add Property button in the dashboard.
  • Choose between:
    • Domain: Covers all URLs across subdomains and protocols.
    • URL Prefix: For a specific URL prefix.
  • Enter your domain or URL and proceed.

Step 3: Verify Ownership

  • For Domain Verification (DNS):
    1. Select the Domain property type.
    2. Copy the TXT record provided by GSC.
    3. Log in to your domain registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare).
    4. Add a new TXT record:
      • Host: @ (or leave blank depending on your provider)
      • Value: The TXT record from GSC
      • TTL: Default value (e.g., 3600 seconds)
    5. Save the record.
    6. Click Verify in GSC (note that DNS changes can take up to 48 hours).
  • For URL Prefix Verification:
    1. Choose the URL Prefix property type.
    2. Use one of the following methods:
      • HTML File Upload: Download and upload the verification file to your site’s root directory.
      • HTML Tag: Add a meta tag to the head section of your homepage.
      • Google Analytics: Use an existing GA tag for verification.
      • Google Tag Manager: Use an existing GTM container.
      • Domain Name Provider: Verify via your domain registrar (similar to the DNS method).
